Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT) was established in 2004 as the national CERT to deal with computer-related and internet-related security incidents in Negara Brunei Darussalam.
BruCERT is the central hub which coordinates with international CERTs, network service providers, government agencies, and other relevant organizations to facilitate the detection, analysis and prevention of security incidents on the internet.
Through a global affiliation with other CERTs, BruCERT acquires valuable information on IT security threats and shares findings on security risks detected within the nation's IT infrastructure. These findings are made publicly accessible with the objective of increasing IT security awareness.
BruCERT is also a member of international security expert organizations such as Asia Pacific CERT (APCERT), Organization of The Islamic Cooperation - Computer Emergency Response Teams (OIC-CERT) and Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST) in dealing with IT Security-related incidents and coordinating with other CERTs in fighting cybercrime worldwide.
Incident handling involves receiving, analyzing and responding to requests or reports, of which the activities include:
- Taking action to protect systems and networks affected or threatened by IT security threats
- Providing solutions and mitigation strategies from relevant advisories or alerts
- Looking for signs of intrusive activities on other parts of the network
- Filtering network traffic
- Rebuilding systems
- Recommending patching or repairing systems (upon request / case-by-case basis)
- Developing other response or workaround strategies.
Involves receiving information and reports of the incident and providing vulnerability consultancy and research to analyse the nature, the mechanics and the effects of the vulnerabilities that could have contributed to the incident.
Involves the scientific process of capturing (imaging) and analyzing information stored in any electronic format while maintaining the integrity, for the purpose of investigating allegations, to find the truth, with no predisposition as to the outcome.
BruCERT provides a wide range of IT security-related information in the form of early alerts. warnings, announcements of new vulnerabilities, cybersecurity threats and even information on new security protection technology or flaws available in the market.
BruCERT runs a public awareness program called Secure Verify Connect, aimed at raising awareness of online safety and information security among the Brunei public, through education, seminar and workshops.
